Dr. Asa and Jean Talbot have been regular short-term missionaries to Haiti since 1993. They spend three weeks, twice a year, there working to help the people and share the Gospel in the northwest of the island nation. Their area is predominantly farm and is in the central mountain range.
Asa is a retired physician/preacher and Jean is a retired nurse. Although the original thrust of the mission (of which they are among the earliest directors) was medical, the work has expanded to include many other aspects of assistance to the poorest of the poor. The underlying concept of Missions of Love is to offer "A hand up - rather than a handout". That is to say, the mission supplies what the people cannot acquire for themselves - medical care and medicines, building supplies, clean water, and education. Haitians are trained to run the various ministry programs in the absence of the Ameriacn missionaries.
Specifically Asa and Jean have a busy ministry doing eye exams, testing and treating for glaucoma, and supplying eyeglasses for the needy. In addition to the eye clinic Asa is available to the general medical clinic staff for more complicated cases and minor surgeries and preaches in one of the area churches as often as possible. Jean has an active ministry with the local children and the ladies of the area.
In the future this web site will detail more of the many ministries active in the Jolivert area. Here are some highlights from a recent visit to the students of New Covenant Christian Academy south New Jersey.
